Neurofibromatosis

Neurofibromatosis (or NF) can be broken down into three different diseases. All together they grow tumors on the nerve tissue. These tumors are often benign but some cause extreme pain due to the compression it does to nerves and other tissue. The above picture demonstrates the severity of some cases of NF. In most cases, NF symptoms stay the same but in NF2 and Schwannomatosis (rarer cases of Neurofibromatosis) the symptoms are progressive. People with NF tend to live to normal life expectancy. Some also have tumors on nerves in eyes. These tumors are red-orange on can be spotted by the naked eye. This disease is genetic and can be passed down from either parent. This disease is autosomal (not sex-linked). This means a child born to a mother with NF has a 50% chance of having it also.

NF was discovered in 1882 by a German Pathologist named Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen. Because this was discovered in 1882, there isn't much information on von Rechklinghausen.

Symptoms of NF:

Multiple Skin Lesions

Curvature of Spine

Enlargement of Bones

Hearing Loss

Learning Disability

NF can be diagnosed through buttonholing (distinguishes between NF tumors and fatty tumors). An ophthalmologist (eye doctor) can also use a slit-lamp microscope to see lesions on the iris. An MRI scan can also be used to spot the tumors. Treatments include a biopsy, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, but there is no cure. Because this disease is inherited, there is no way it can be prevented. Organisations like the "National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke" are running clinical trials on drugs to see if there is a medicine to keep down the tumor flare ups.

1. It was possible to eat a Trilobite, minerals, such as Diamond, Emerald's, Sapphire's, and Rubies, are found in volcanic tubes, and the air pockets in the core are real. I also learned that volcanic tubes are real.

2. We never proved that the birds glowed, that there are no core pocket volcanoes, and that there is no way to "Journey to the Center of the Earth".

1. My favorite topic that we have went over in Earth Science this year would have to be Astronomy in general.

2. Astronomy is the study of everything in space like: stars, planets, planetessimals, protostars, and blackholes.

3. I think this topic is so interesting because it gives us information on things we may never be able to come in contact with. I liked this in particular because it gave me a chance to study and new aspect of the universe.

My Favorite Planet/Moon

I would have to say my favorite planet/moon is the one that revolves around us. The reason it is my favorite is because it is our nearest neighbor.

Moon Water Discovery:
The moon bombing mission may have sounded dumb when you first heard of it but it was a huge success. With a special measurement tool the discovered water vapor at the point of impact. About a month ago they planned on basically using a lunar bomb to blow up a small portion of the moon. This wasn't really a significant amount of the lunar surface but it began research of a very significant scientific study. You would think the water would be at a little amount on the moon but it is actually a significant amount.

Binary Planets:
Have you ever heard of binary planets? You haven't, well binary planets are planets, moons, or a moon and a planet revolving around each other. An example of binary planets and/or moons is Pluto and its Moon, Charon. Pluto does revolve around the sun but because of Charons size, it revolves around its moon too. Fasinating right, its really cool to see these planets and moons in action.

Titan, One of Saturns Moons:
If the Earth were to experience a terrible event, Titan would be our only hope. Our atmosphere is somewhat similar to the one of Titan. Titan was discovered by Christiaan Huygens. It was discovered in 1655.

Is Pluto A Planet?

Is Pluto a planet in my opinion? I think if you consider it a planet, you would have to consider the other 4 dwarfs planets as planets.

1. The seasonal reversing of wind is a monsoon.
2. The Bermuda High, and the intense heating of the Mohave Desert called a thermal low.
3. It brings a lot of rain to the desert.
4. It could cause over watering of crops, and flooding.
5. There was heavy rainfall which because they were in a drought the instant change was unprepared for causing people to stay in there homes and drown to death.
6. If there bad or not depends on the situation, if it doesn't cause flooding it then it is good, if it does it is bad.

Global Warming?

1. Global warming is the increase in average temperatures of Earth and the atmosphere due in part to increased carbon dioxide levels.

2. Yes I do because the information proves it true.

3. Temperature increase, polar ice caps melt, and rise in Carbon Dioxide.

4. The temperature change occurs in any generation, The IPCC hasn't proven it yet, and climate change has been more rapid in the past.

Condensation?

Several examples of condensation are: Your breath on a glass, a Dr.Pepper fresh out of the refridgerator, dew on the grass in the morning, the ring left on the table after you pick up a glass of ice water, or seeing your breath on a cold day.

Hurricane Katrina! (Dun Dun Dun)

I chose Hurricane Katrina, which was a category 5 at its strongest and once it made landfall it was a category 3. It started just south of the Bahamas where it was a category 1, it was a category 3 when it was at the Florida Keys, and a category 5 when it made just before land, and at landfall a category 3. It killed approximately 1,200 people and cost $75 billion dollar in the Mississippi area and New Orleans area.

AIR MASSES?

The 4 air masses are Continental- Dry, Marintine- Wet, Tropical- Warm, and Polar- Cold. Warm air masses bring the most hurricanes. Contenintal air masses are most likely to bring a drought because they are extremely dry. Contenintal polar is most likely to bring a lake-effect snowstorm. Arctic and Highland are two other air masses. Highland is elevated and arctic is icey.

Greenhouse Effect

IR radition is the abreviation for Infrared Radition. The three main greenhouse gases are methane, water, and carbon dioxide. The greenhouse effect is terrible because it melts the ice caps, and takes the homes of poor little polar bears. We All Need Homes! :(

Scientist can tell the age of a tree by its rings. Each of the rings represents a different time period. So all it would be was counting the rings. This is useful for scientist when they are finding the age of the trees. This is an example of relative dating because it can tell how old in years a tree is, maybe not days, or weeks, but definitely years.

Volcanoes Or Earthquakes

I believe that earthquakes are the most dangerous out of the two because earthquakes can make buildings fall while if your smart, you would get away from a volcano as soon as it show any signs of explosion.
